Carpet Care Guide – Getting The most out of your new carpet.

Here at Clayton’s, we have produced a  guide to looking after your carpet, including advice on removing some of the more common household spills and stains.
We advise that you bookmark this page on your favourites menu, then you will be able to act quickly if a little emergency happens!

Getting The Most Out Of Your New Carpet

The best advice that we can give to you regarding your new Clayton’s carpet is to vacuum it regularly. Your carpet will shed excess fibres for quite along time after fitting, this is completely normal and it is caused as the excess fibre used in the manufacturing process leaves the carpet. Do not worry, this is not a fault, on the contrary it means that your carpet is settling in, so just vacuum these away.

Avoiding Premature Wear

The most common cause of premature wear on a carpet is small pieces of sand and grit which are carried in on peoples shoes, dropping into the carpet and becoming trapped below the surface of the carpet pile. As you walk along the carpet, these tiny particles are agitated and they wear away at the base of the carpet fibres like sandpaper. This can cause your carpet to wear prematurely. The best advice is to vacuum at least twice a week and avoid wearing outdoor shoes inside the house, this will dramatically reduce this kind of wear.

After your carpet has been fitted, you may notice that there are some loose ends in the pile, these are left over from the manufacturing process. It is important that you do not pull at these as you could damage the carpet, simply take a small pair of sharp scissors and trim these level with the rest of the carpet.

Hall, Stair & Landing Carpet

The stair carpet takes the most punishment, on a daily basis people run up and down the stairs flattening the pile in the process. When vacuuming the stairs, use the carpet attachment and comb up the pile to help counteract the effects of daily use. As the stair nosings are particularly exposed, it is to be expected that these will begin to show wear earlier than the other parts of the carpet.

We recommend that you spend money on a good quality hard wearing stair carpet, as buying cheap will prove to be false economy. Another tip when you do buy your stair carpet is to buy a bit extra. This can then be stored so that if any of the treads do wear out, you can simply replace this tread without having the expense of replacing the whole hall, stairs and landing.

we recommend that you save some spare carpet (if there is any), which can then be used to re-fit areas of particularly high wear (such as half landings or bottom stairs) at some time in the future.

With a little care and attention you will be able to prolong the life of your carpet and help it keep its good looks for many years to come.

Decorative Rugs

At Clayton’s we have a large specialist rug department featuring rugs of all types and sizes from traditional to cool and casual or contemporary . We have noticed that people are becoming switched on to the fact that not only are rugs an attractive and sylish way of enhancing a room, but they also offer the added benefit  of protecting areas of high wear  such as in front of chairs and sofas. People have a habit of shuffling their feet when sitting and  watching television or relaxing with friends. This can damage the pile of the carpet causing unnecessary wear and flattening. This is actually a common occurrence and people do it without realising, it is referred to in the carpet trade as ‘tv shuffle’. Reduce unnecessary wear by using rugs and make people take their shoes off when they visit, you will literally add years to the life of yourcarpet!

Advice For Carpet Spills & Stains

There is no home in the land which hasn’t suffered an accidental spill of some description. If spills are left untreated they usually turn into a  nasty stain, our tips below will help you out when those accidents happen!

The most crucial advise that we can give when you have a spill or a stain on your carpet is to act quickly. Removing spills as quickly as possible means that they are less likely to become permanent stains.

How to clean a fresh carpet stain or spillage

Accidental spillages happen in every home and have the potential to ruin your carpet. Here are some simple tips that may help prevent a spill becoming a nasty stain - ACT QUICKLY!

Avoid letting a spill dry on your carpet as this gives it more chance of bonding permanently with the fibres (However, the opposite is true of mud which should be allowed to dry, it can then simply be vacuumed out of the carpet) - NEVER SCRUB!

If you scrub your carpet it is likely that you will push a spill deeper into the pile making it virtually impossible to remove, always blot!   The other problem with rubbing and scrubbing is that even if you do manage to remove the stain, you will probably have damaged the pile, altering its appearance by flattening it and making it fluffy.  Remember, always blot stains with absorbent material (use only white cloths, there is a danger of dye transfer if you use a coloured cloth to clean a stain). - USE COLD WATER!

If you add hot water to a spill you are likely to make it set, actually encouraging it to bond permanently with your carpet. Instead, use cold water, preferably carbonated soda water to remove the spillage from the carpet. - DO NOT DRENCH!

Apply small amounts of water to the spill. If you apply too much water to your carpet, this will seep through into the carpet backing and may cause damage to the structure of the carpet.  We recommend that you dampen a clean, unbleached white absorbent cloth to blot the water and the spill out of the carpet. The secret is to take your time, be patient and repeat the process of adding water, then blotting until you have removed the spillage completely.
