Fabric & Leather Sofas

Caring For Your Fabric Sofa

Upholstered furniture gets just as dusty and dirty as cabinet furniture. – the difference is that you can’t always see it. Upholstery should be viewed in a similar way to clothing, ie it needs regular cleaning (at least once a year) by a reputable cleaning company like Servicemaster.

REGULAR, EASY CARE MAINTENANCE

Try to keep pets off the upholstery, and be careful of sharp obstacles such as belt buckles, toys and watch straps snagging the fabric. If snags do occur, try and push them back into the weave, if this is not possible, cut them off with a sharp pair of scissors- do not pull them in any circumstances.

Discourage lively children from using your new suite as a climbing frame if you want to prolong its lifespan. Arms are not designed to be sat on, and sofas and chairs are not designed as childrens trampolines!

Use protective armcaps where possible as this is the area most likely to show wear.

Reversible seat and back cushions should be turned regularly and plumped up to maintain their shape. As a guide, these cushions should be attended to at least on a weekly basis. If you have chosen a suite which contains feather or fibre seat interiors, this will certainly require daily ‘plumping up’ as the  nature of these fillings dictates that if they are not plumped daily, they will flatten off.

Where cushions are not interchangeable, even out the wear by using all of the seats, not just your favourite one all of the time!

Upholstery can be lightly vacuumed or gently brushed to remove dust, but take care when vacuuming delicate fringe and braid details.

Smooth out creases in the cushions daily to prevent them becoming permanent and causing premature wear.

Sitting on the front edges of cushions, or on the arms of furniture may cause distortion or damage, you should not sit on the very edges of your cushions under any circumstances.

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat, these may result in fading and degradation. Protect furniture from bright sunlight by drawing curtains or blinds wherever possible.

We recommend that you don’t let pets sit on your furniture, we know that they love to be comfy too, but animal coats contain abrasive oils that will accelerate fabric wear and reduce the appearance of fabrics. – we know…. they look at you with those big eyes….but you really must keep them off the furniture.

Wood or decorative facings require minimal maintenance, and should only be occasionally wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust. Do not use spray polishes or solvent cleaners, as these can have a damaging effect upon both the facings and adjoining fabrics.

STOP SPILLS BECOMING STAINS

We thoroughly recommend that you take out our Guardian fabric protector programme, this will give you a full 5 years peace of mind against food and drink stains.

If you do get a spill, remember the following rules for spot removal:

Remember that the best time to clean up most spots and spills is right after they occur. Using the proper agent, follow these techniques:

If liquid, blot up as much as possible with a clean cloth.

If the material is dry, loosen residue with the blunt edge of a knife or spatula. Scrape or vacuum up as much of the residue as you can.

Dampen clean white un-dyed cloth with the proper cleaning agent for the particular type of stain.

Blot area gently (DO NOT RUB), working from the outer edge to the centre of the spot. Turn the cloth frequently so you are always using a clean area.

Repeat this process until the spot is removed or until you no longer have a transfer of the spot to your cloth. Be careful not to get the fabric excessively wet.

Rinse the spot with water. Blot any excess moisture.

Align the  pile. Protect the area from any traffic and allow to dry.

Cleaning

Always follow the manufacturers cleaning and care label instructions.
Have your upholstery professionally cleaned at least once per year to help prevent soiling becoming ingrained. We recommend that you use employ the services of a professional cleaning company such as:

Servicemaster Clean,  Unit 3, Chieftain Way, Tritton Rd, Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN6 7RY Tel: 0800 3891031
(tell them you got their details from Clayton’s quote ref cla01 for a 10% discount)

Have all of the suite cleaned at the same time, as a slight colour change can sometimes occur as soiling is removed.

Caring For Your Leather Furniture

Leather is a natural product, it breathes, is warm and has individual characteristics which make each hide unique. Leather will always display traces of its origin such as brand scars, creases and growth.

These hallmarks add character to the suite and do not affect the wearing qualities of the product. Leather is highly resilient and durable and over time develops a patina that increasingly enhances its appeal.

Leather needs very little specialist care but to get the most out of your investment, you should follow the guidelines below:

Always protect the suite from direct sunlight, as this will otherwise accelerate the natural ongoing discolouration process.

On pigmented leather, dust should be removed by vacuuming and wiping over with a specialist cleaner such as Leathermaster leather cleaner.   It is the Suede, Nu-buck and Aniline leathers that require particular care, as they lack a protective coating. Only use products specifically designed for use on this kind of finish and always follow instructions carefully. Always test the cleaning process first in an unseen area of the suite to ensure compatability.

Never place leather furniture against any heating source such as a radiator

To remove spillages, never rub into the leather as this will cause staining.

Liquid spills should be quickly raised from the leather by using the edge of absorbent paper towels and then by dabbing the area lightly with clean towels.

Seat, arm and back cushions should, where possible be plumped regularly to maintain the shape of your suite.

Try to avoid sitting on the edges of cushions or arms, as this may cause uneven wear and distortion of the padding and leather.

Where zips are used, these should not be required to be unfastened, as they are there purely for ease of manufacture.

Certain non colourfast clothing such as denim can stain light coloured leather if it comes into regular contact.

Sharp objects may scratch the surface of leather.

If you need additional help or advice, feel free to call or email us. If you really want to reduce the risks of damage and ensure that you can use your furniture without the worry of scratching, burn marks, cuts and stains, we recommend that you take out our Guardian Leather Protection Programme at the time of purchase.
