MEASURING UP FOR YOUR NEW FURNITURE

One of the most important factors when deciding to make a purchase of furniture, is to consider how well the pieces chosen will fit in your room.  As part of the process of choosing new furniture for your home, some time spent planning at the start can avoid problems later.
You should always begin by looking at the largest piece of furniture in the room first, for example,  the sofa in the living room, the dining table in the dining area, the bed in the bedroom.

You should place your furniture in the room in a way that is pleasing to the eye. You can take inspiration from the many design magazines which are now available to help you achieve the layout and look you require.

You should make sure that your room is not too cramped and that the furniture is arranged in such a way that is easy to move around.

Consider what you have in the room already:

Is your room cramped?, if so do you require more space?
Are you short on seating space?
Are you short on storage space?
If considering a recliner, will you have sufficient room to operate it properly?
When considering a new bed, can you go up a size?, going up from 4ft6” to 5ft really can make a massive difference in the quality of sleep you achieve.

Use the items you have already as a benchmark,
Are the new items larger or smaller than those that you have at present?
Would a different layout work better?

Access into the room:

Before you place an order, please carefully look at all the access areas in your home, from the first entry doorway through to your selected room, do you have patio doors to make delivery easier? Have you had any alterations done which could make delivery difficult?.

Consider the following points:

When you made your last purchase, was it easy to get that furniture in?, Have you had a porch assembled at the front of the house which could hinder delivery? Do you have alternative access at the rear of the property ie patio doors? compare the measurements of what you already have with the model you want to replace it with.

Ensure that  widths and diagonal depths are less than the entryway dimensions. Check the diagonal depth on upholstery by placing a straight tape measure from the back of the frame to the front of the arm. If you are unsure, please visit or call our store .

We will be happy to help.  – See Diagrams Of How To Measure Below:

When ordering a wall display unit, measure the wall you wish to place it against from floor to ceiling. The diagonal height should be less than the entryway.

Measure the width and height of all doorways, hallways, and stairways, including including banister rails and turns, with tall items, if the item is taller than the doorway, consider if there enough space to lean an item over, or carry it in on its side.

Don’t forget about radiators, wall and ceiling lights, and other obstacles that could hinder access.

Stage 1 :Measuring Up For Access Into The Property

It is all too easy to get carried away in the magic of buying new furniture, it is really important that you take the time to check that your carefully chosen purchase will actually fit into your home.
We will do everything possible to complete the delivery but can accept no responsibility for goods that are too large to get into the house. To avoid any embarrassment and potential cost to you of such problem, check the measurements below before ordering, to help ensure a successful delivery.
Measure the heights (A) and the widths (B) of any hallways and door accesses,
as well as the entry clearance (C).

Step 2: Measure your chosen furniture

Items displayed on this website include basic dimensions, but you may need to either visit or telephone us at Clayton’s to obtain additional measurements.

Upholstery:

For sofas, first measure the width (i), followed by the diagonal depth (ii). The diagonal depth may be determined by first placing a straight edge from the highest point of the back frame (excluding cushions) to the front of the arm.
Then measure from the bottom rear corner of the sofa up to the point that bisects the straight edge.

Cabinets:

For cabinets, measure the diagonal height at the widest point (i) and depth (ii).

If you are at all uncertain about your measurements, our staff will be pleased to help.
For a nominal charge, if you live within 15 Miles of our store, we can sometimes make a special arrangement for a ‘dry run’ where our delivery crew will call round to your house and assess the access for you. Where possible, they may bring the showroom display item you want to buy with them to see if it will fit.
If access through a door is too tight, it may be possible to get the furniture in via another route. Customers sometimes have windows taken out or patio doors removed, although for complex deliveries there can be an additional charge.
Sometimes, things that seem like they are too big to go through an access point may be ok. All of our bed bases over 3ft wide are made in sections to allow easier access. Some sofas have removeable feet and back cushions, with larger wardrobes being available in KD or “Self Assembly” format, often meaning that there can be a solution to the problem. Will The Furniture Fit The Room?

Decide where you want to position your furniture in the room, and assess whether it will fit. You can do this by taking the following measurements Start by taking the following measurements:

Measure the surface area of the space where you want to put the furniture. Make a rough sketch of the room and its layout, ie the position of doors, radiators, windows, tv etc with a note of the dimensions.

Measure the sizes of the furniture you wish to replace as a comparison if you are tight for space.

Measure the width, height, and depth of the model you want to order.

Clayton’s Handy tip !

A handy tip is to stick some sheets of newspaper together and cut out to give yourself an exact idea of the footprint size of each item you wish to purchase in the room, this also allows you to slide the pieces of paper along the wall to see if different positions and layouts would work better, before committing to a purchase!
